Rescue Lake Simcoe Coalition and Town of Georgina Launch “Love Our Lake” Initiative

GEORGINA, ON – April 20th, 2026 – The Rescue Lake Simcoe Coalition (RLSC) and the Town
of Georgina are partnering on the Love Our Lake Initiative, a year-long education and
community action program designed to help residents take practical steps to protect Lake
Simcoe and build local climate resilience.

“Love Our Lake is about making it easy for people to do the right thing,” said Jonathan Scott,
Executive Director of RLSC. “Small actions, such as planting trees, reducing runoff and
rethinking shoreline practices, add up to meaningful improvements in water quality and
resilience. This partnership with the Town of Georgina allows us to meet residents where they
are and turn awareness into action.”

The program will deliver hands-on outreach, community events and targeted stewardship
activities throughout 2026, with a particular focus on shoreline health, tree planting and
neighbourhood-level actions that reduce runoff and pollution entering the lake. This outreach
and education will connect everyday actions to Lake Simcoe’s long-term health.

“Lake Simcoe is truly Georgina’s crown jewel, and protecting it requires both leadership and
community involvement,” said Mayor Margaret Quirk. “Love Our Lake helps translate our
Climate Action Plan and environmental priorities into visible, local action. This program
empowers residents to be part of the solution while strengthening our shoreline communities.”
The program supports Georgina’s Corporate Strategic Plan priority of Advancing Environmental
Sustainability and complements the Town’s Climate Action Plan by embedding climate action
into everyday community life.

RLSC will deliver the program in collaboration with Town staff and community partners, with a
strong emphasis on youth engagement, stewardship education and measurable outcomes. The
initiative will also connect residents to existing greening and low-carbon programs offered by
partner organizations.

By the end of 2026, Love Our Lake aims to engage hundreds of residents directly through
events and outreach, support new native tree plantings in priority neighbourhoods, and reach
thousands more through community communications. The year-long initiative is being funded by
the Town of Georgina’s 2026 Non-Profit Organization Grant Program.
